Vocational Training Support

Training at Young Africa, Chitungwiza

Unemployment, and youth unemployment in particular, is very high in Zimbabwe.
That is why, since 2022, the DSG has been supporting up to eight trainees a year, depending on the donations available.

As there is no dual vocational training system like the one in Germany, courses are held at vocational training centres or colleges. At the Young Africa vocational training centre in Chitungwiza, young people who would otherwise have no chance of vocational training because of poverty, poor school results or their personal circumstances can receive training. The training places great emphasis on teaching young people not only the technical basics of their trade but also the basics of running their own business.
A one-year course including work clothes and tools costs around US$1,300. The DSG covers this course fee. The trainees are responsible for their own accommodation and living costs.
The participants are selected by our partner, the Zimbabwe Workcamps Association (ZWA). Through their involvement in ZWA activities, these young adults have shown that they are willing to use the skills they acquire for the benefit of society in the future as well.

Ruwarashe was the first participant in the training programme and successfully completed the course as a solar electrician. She was very fortunate to be taken on by the company where she did her internship after completing her training.

Elias Mukwada began his training in 2024/2025. His life story is typical of many young Zimbabweans: he lost his mother and, as a child, had to work to help his father feed his younger siblings. As he was only able to attend school intermittently, he did not achieve good school results. His training as a car mechanic, which he has successfully completed, considerably improves his chances of an independent life.

Lovemore Takudzwa has also lost a parent. He took the electrician course and completed it successfully.

Elshama Chingundika is 20 years old. Her parents are refugees from Mozambique and currently have no regular work. She is training as a solar technician. All three are members of the ZWA and will contribute their skills to workcamps after their training.
In January 2026, Mazvita Zvinoira, Shallom Karedza and Bridget Fatima Brown began their training in baking, car mechanics and catering. Generous donations from our members make this opportunity possible for these three young women.

Loice – From Shadow into Light

Through the Kernen-Masvingo Gesellschaft, Karin and Klaus Kopp initially sponsored the schooling of Loice Nyangari, who grew up as an orphan, at the Bondolfi mission station. Over the years, such a personal relationship developed that the Kopp family also financed her university studies. In a book of her own poems and texts, Loice describes her life.

The book “Loice – vom Schatten ins Licht” (“Loice – From Shadow into Light”) consists of 36 poems, stories and letters written by Loice Nyangari herself. These texts offer a deep insight into her life and feelings as a young orphan in Zimbabwe. They are sensitive, open, sad and yet optimistic, and tell her story authentically. Details
