Mission
We, the German-Zimbabwean Society (Deutsch-Simbabwische Gesellschaft e.V., DSG e.V.), are a bilateral organisation dedicated to promoting exchange between people from Germany and Zimbabwe.
We see ourselves as a platform for encounters that aims to create, facilitate, support, and maintain contacts and friendships between citizens as well as institutions of both countries, across all levels and areas of life.
To fulfil these statutory objectives, we draw on a substantial pool of knowledge, experience, and personal connections related to Zimbabwe that many of our members possess.
Arts and Culture
From the San rock paintings and the architecture of Great Zimbabwe to outstanding sculptors and painters, Zimbabwean pottery, mbira music and internationally renowned writers, Zimbabwe has a long and rich artistic and cultural tradition.
Introducing this diverse cultural scene to audiences in Germany and encouraging encounters between the two cultures are important objectives of the DSG.

Partners and Networks
The DSG cooperates with various associations and organisations in Germany and Zimbabwe. Our cooperation includes exchanging information, supporting one another and organising joint events. Numerous members also belong to both the DSG and its partner organisations.
History of the DSG
The German-Zimbabwean Society was founded in 1984 to promote mutual understanding and contribute to cultural and political relations between Germany and Zimbabwe.
In 1998, Dr Reinhold Hemker, who served as a Member of the German Bundestag from 1994 to 2009, was asked to stand for election as President of the DSG. His involvement broadened the Society’s activities. Contacts with numerous artists were established, and exhibitions—particularly those featuring stone sculpture—were supported.
In November 2024, the DSG celebrated its 40th anniversary with many guests. Its membership has grown from approximately 40 members in 1990 to more than 140 today.
